JIM GUTTMANN
Bass
Artist - Instructor
About
In the course of five decades, bassist Jim Guttmann’s eclectic career has taken him from Carnegie Hall to (what used to be) smokey dives, from Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw to the legendary folk music venue Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from Australia’s Womad Festival to Edinburgh’s Festival Fringe. In that time he has played the blues with Jams Cotton and Johnny Shines, Western Swing with Tiny Moore, klezmer music with Itzhak Perlman and classical music with Benjamin Zander’s Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.
Jim has been teaching performance on both string bass and bass guitar, coaching jazz and klezmer music ensembles and teaching basic music theory since the early 1980s. His students range in age from elementary school to retirees. At the core of Jim's teaching is the search for his students' individual musical interests and learning styles, allowing the student to open the doors to his or her own musical discovery.
